A whole hog roast stops a party when it arrives. It also requires real planning, real equipment, and real skill to execute in an outdoor setting. Here is what you need to know before booking one.
The Basics
A market-weight whole hog runs between 150 and 200 pounds live weight, which translates to roughly 70–100 pounds of finished cooked meat after trim, moisture loss, and rendering. At a generous ¾ pound of finished meat per person, a single hog feeds approximately 90–130 guests.
The cook takes 10–14 hours depending on the size of the animal and the cooking method. We start the night before or very early the morning of your event. Setup and teardown for a whole hog roast is more involved than a standard buffet: larger equipment, more fire management, more theatrical service. Plan for our team to be on-site for 12–16 hours on event day.
What It Includes
A whole hog package from Lil' Piece includes the hog, all seasoning and preparation, the cook, and carved service at the buffet. We pair the hog with two sides, a sauce bar, and bread. Guests gather at the carving station; it doubles as the focal point for the event.
Who It's For
Whole hog works best for events of 80 guests or more where you want the food to be the centerpiece. Weddings, large birthday parties, family reunions, end-of-season events. For a corporate lunch or small rehearsal dinner, a brisket and pulled pork buffet is more practical and nearly as impressive.
Events at Island Green in Greenville are a natural fit. The outdoor space accommodates the equipment, and guests arriving for a golf outing or lodge weekend get smoke in the air from the morning and a carved presentation at service. You'll hear about it for months after.
Pricing
Whole hog pricing varies based on hog size, guest count, travel distance, and additional menu items. No two events are the same, so we don't post fixed pricing online. Send us your date and guest count and we'll give you an accurate quote within 48 hours.
